Meghalaya Education Minister Acknowledges Impact Of NEHU Crisis On NEP Implementation

The situation at NEHU has escalated due to the prolonged absence of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Prabha Shankar Shukla.

Meghalaya’s Education Minister, Rakkam A Sangma, has voiced serious concerns over the ongoing crisis at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), which he says is severely hindering the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in the state.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Sangma highlighted the broader implications of the impasse, which is not only disrupting NEHU’s operations but also affecting over 80 affiliated colleges across Meghalaya.

The situation at NEHU has escalated due to the prolonged absence of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Prabha Shankar Shukla. The Ministry of Education recently extended Shukla’s leave by 15 days, coinciding with an extension of the mandate for the inquiry committee investigating allegations of mismanagement under his leadership. The committee, led by former UGC Chairman DP Singh and former Assam University Vice-Chancellor Dilip Chandra Nath, aims to address these issues.

Addressing concerns over Professor Shukla’s request for central security to facilitate his return, Sangma clarified that such decisions lie with the central government. However, he stressed the importance of acknowledging students’ grievances.

“This has to be decided by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and the central government. I have nothing to say about it, but the students are our students. They are not enemies to anyone. Sometimes, the voice of our students must be heard, and it must be listened to,” he stated.

While Sangma refrained from commenting on the specifics of the inquiry, he underscored the urgency of resolving the unrest. “Whether the demand is genuine or not, finding a solution for the academic career of the students is paramount,” he said.

The prolonged uncertainty at NEHU threatens to derail educational progress in Meghalaya, with ripple effects across affiliated institutions. The crisis, if unresolved, could undermine NEP 2020’s objectives, which aim to revitalise the education sector. Sangma’s remarks highlight the critical need for swift and effective resolution to safeguard the academic future of thousands of students.
