The Congress is going all out to induct new faces in the party in the run-up to the 2023 Assembly polls. This was informed by CLP leader Ampareen Lyngdoh who added that there was no need to give too much importance to old faces who have left the party. The Meghalaya CLP leader made it clear that the party will “raise new faces, in the party in the run-up to the 2023 Assembly polls.”

Lyngdoh also termed the poaching of Congress’ MLAs “beneficial in the long-run”. “Through these new faces that we will bring, we will infuse and increase the dynamics of the Congress party,” she said.

The Congress is now working to strengthen all the blocks from where the 12 deserters had functioned as MLAs. It is also dissolving various blocks level committees to ensure that sympathisers of the 12 MLAs are stripped of their responsibilities.

On Congress’ petition of disqualification of defecting MLAs Lyngdoh said “The provision of the Law ensures that while filling petitions, we are given the freedom to observe. It is a strategy we will be using, and correct, incorrect is an irrelevant debate, but now we are given yet another space, to reaffirm our commitment and reaffirm or stand, that the 12 MLA’s need disqualification. The strategy may not be understood by the public but as leaders it is adopted to benefit us in the long run”.

On the question of petitioning the parent body of NSUI for dissolving the state committee, she commented that it was crucial as several of those members may or may not join the defecting group.
