Meghalaya Congress MLA from Rajabala constituency, Azad Zaman passed away in the wee hours of Thursday. He was 47 years old.

According to sources, Zaman died of cardiac arrest at around 2:30 am.

Tributes poured in as soon as the news of the Congress legislator’s demise broke out.

Expressing shock, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma took to Twitter to condole the death of Azad Zaman.

“Shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden demise of Hon’ble MLA of Rajabala, Meghalaya, Dr. Azad Zaman. Dynamic and young leader of the plain belt of Garo Hills who worked tirelessly for the people. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace,” Sangma tweeted.

East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh expressing her grief said the demise of Azad Zaman was a great loss for the party.

“With profound shock, sorrow and a sense of deep loss, I am saddened by the premature passing away of our @INCIndia legislator from Rajabala constituency of Meghalaya, Dr Azad Zaman @DrAzadZaman. I will be leaving Shillong shortly for his home to pay my last respects. R.I.P,” tweeted Ampareen Lyngdoh.

An MBBS from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Zaman had won the Rajabala assembly seat in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district during his second attempt in 2018.
