Meghalaya CM Conrad Pledges Revival of Crumbling Garo School After Emotional Visit

First Published: 23rd May, 2025 17:53 IST

On Thursday, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma visited the school to personally assess its condition.

Where dreams should take flight, they have long remained grounded beneath a collapsing roof. Nongspung Government Lower Primary School in Ri Bhoi district, Meghalaya stands as a powerful symbol of resilience amid decades of neglect.

For nearly 50 years, this government school has educated children from underprivileged families in Nongspung village, under Jirang block, despite facing severe infrastructure issues, leaking roofs, waterlogged classrooms, and walls that bear the scars of long-term abandonment.

On Thursday, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma visited the school to personally assess its condition. Moved by what he saw, he pledged immediate and phased infrastructural development to restore the institution to a safe and dignified learning space.

“The building is in a very bad condition, and many challenges lie ahead,” the Chief Minister said. “I discussed the matter with the local MLA, and we agreed to improve the school’s infrastructure in a phased manner. I promise that we will use funds from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF), the MLA’s fund, and the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) to rebuild and upgrade this school.”
