The CM Connect programme exemplifies a people-first approach to governance, enabling communities to directly engage with policymakers.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday hosted the CM Connect programme at Ranikor in South West Khasi Hills, engaging directly with the community to address their grievances and find immediate solutions. The programme witnessed a large turnout of people who voiced their concerns about road connectivity, water issues, man-elephant conflicts, low farm productivity.

One of the prominent issues raised during the programme was the damage caused by wild elephants to crops and homes in the village of Mawpylun. The Chief Minister, who also holds the Forest and Environment portfolio, assured swift action by the department. He emphasised accountability, promising strict action against forest officials found negligent or under the influence of alcohol while responding to such emergencies.

“It is a matter of life and death for the people, and we will not tolerate negligence,” he stated firmly, highlighting the urgency of addressing human-elephant conflicts in affected areas.

Villagers from Nongnah highlighted the untapped tourism potential in their area. Responding promptly, the Chief Minister announced a government initiative to invest Rs 30 lakh for constructing a resort and improving the road network connecting the village. He also stressed the importance of community involvement in tourism, saying, “Tourism is not just about buildings; it is about how you make visitors feel and how you involve your community.”

Sangma underscored the government’s commitment to promoting Meghalaya as a global tourism destination by building the necessary infrastructure and branding the state’s unique offerings.

Road connectivity issues were a recurring theme during the programme. Villagers from Keniang raised concerns about poor transport infrastructure hindering the movement of agricultural and horticultural produce, especially bay leaves, for which the village is renowned. The Chief Minister assured them that these challenges would be addressed to enhance the region’s economic prospects.

Similarly, residents from Pomwadar, Tibbiching, and Phlangdiolin spoke about the lack of banking and healthcare facilities. Sangma directed officials to introduce mobile banking services in the region and prioritise healthcare and education improvements. He reiterated the government’s commitment to bridging infrastructure gaps in remote areas.

Residents of Khonjyo A highlighted challenges faced by border communities, including limited access to water and electricity. Responding to their concerns, the Chief Minister directed officials to expedite solutions and ensure the Jal Jeevan Mission is fully implemented by April 2025.

Farmers from various villages expressed concerns over declining crop yields and sought government assistance. The Chief Minister encouraged them to utilise schemes like CM Farm Plus for financial and technical support. He assured them of the government’s commitment to boosting agricultural productivity through targeted interventions.

During the programme, financial assistance under various welfare schemes was distributed to beneficiaries from the Ranikor C&RD block, reflecting the government’s focus on inclusive development.

The CM Connect programme exemplifies a people-first approach to governance, enabling communities to directly engage with policymakers. By addressing concerns on the spot and outlining actionable plans, the initiative fosters transparency and trust between the government and its citizens.

The event was attended by Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLAs Pius Marwein and Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, along with senior government officials, including Principal Secretary P. Sampath Kumar.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s responsiveness and commitment during the event underscored the importance of grassroots engagement in achieving sustainable development. Programmes like CM Connect are a vital step in ensuring that Meghalaya’s growth is inclusive, addressing the needs of even its most remote communities.
