Meghalaya: Relocation of Police Reserve to Tynring: Lyngdoh highlighted its significance in reducing congestion.
The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the relocation of the Police Reserve to Tynring in New Shillong Township as part of efforts to decongest Shillong. Spanning 50 acres, the new Police Reserve will serve as a corridor between the administrative and Knowledge City zones of the township.
Cabinet Minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh stated that the decision aligns with the government’s broader urban development strategy, which includes shifting key institutions such as the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and State Secretariat.
Additionally, the Shillong District Jail will also be relocated. Work on the project is set to commence immediately, with completion expected within the next fiscal year.
Describing the relocation as a crucial step in Shillong’s urban planning, Lyngdoh highlighted its significance in reducing congestion and facilitating further development. “This move will not only help decongest the state capital but also create space for new urban projects,” he said.
With the Cabinet’s approval, the government will begin work on establishing the new Police Reserve without delay. Lyngdoh emphasized that once the police facility is moved, the Shillong District Jail will follow suit. The Department of Urban Affairs will then determine the best use of the vacated land, considering the city’s diverse needs.
Addressing the timeline, Lyngdoh confirmed that the relocation process would begin immediately. “Now that Cabinet approval has been granted, we will take all necessary steps to ensure the new Police Reserve is set up as soon as possible,” he added.
This relocation forms a key component of the state’s long-term vision for decongesting Shillong and promoting planned urban expansion.
