All seven bodies of a family, buried alive in a tragic landslide triggered by incessant rains at Atisia Songmong village in South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya on October 5, have been recovered.
The recovery was confirmed by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) of Meghalaya.
In a post on X, the CMO wrote, “All 7 bodies of the family that was buried alive in a landslide in Atisia Songmong village in South Garo Hills have been recovered. The body of Silje R Marak, 60, was recovered this morning. May their souls rest in peace.”
On October 4, three others were killed in a landslide in West Garo Hills.
The heavy rains have also caused several other accidents. In another tragic event, a tree fell on a car traveling from Dalu to Rongjeng in Songsak Reserve, killing the driver. Four passengers, including a minor, were injured and rushed to the hospital.
Further tragedies unfolded in Rongjeng, East Garo Hills, where a mother and her daughter were buried alive in a landslide. Their bodies were recovered in Gongdop village under the Rongjeng C&RD Block.
Official reports said that 17,302 people from South and West Garo Hills have sought refuge in 69 relief camps.
State authorities are on high alert, urging people to remain cautious and stay away from landslide-prone areas.
