The Meghalaya Cabinet today discussed the amendment to the sixth schedule and the corresponding proposal that has to be sent to the Centre.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that most of the issues have been resolved however there were a few pending issues regarding the number of seats in the councils and the formation of the village councils that had to be discussed.
CM Sangma informed that among the recommendations put forth by the State Government is the number of members in the autonomous district councils in the state. The autonomous district councils of Khasi hills and Garo hills shall have not more than 40 members out of which not more than 4 will be nominated and the rest will be elected through adult suffrage.
For Jaintia Hills the Chief Minister said that in the case of the JHADC there shall be no more than 32 members out of which not more than two will be nominated and the rest will be elected through adult suffrage.
He added that in the case of the village council the Ranbah Shnong , Sordar, the Nokma or the head will be the de facto Chairman of the village council.
The Chief Minister added that this decision was taken after thorough consultation and discussion with all the stakeholders including the district councils.
Furthermore, CM Sangma stated that he will also take up the matter with the Centre once he goes to Delhi to discuss the border issue between Assam and Meghalaya.
