Revive CoMSO: 7 pressure groups from different regions of Meghalaya have come together to revive the CoMSO.
As many as 7 pressure groups from different regions of Meghalaya have come together to revive the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) to collectively address key issues affecting the state. CoMSO had taken up many state issues in the past.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the groups held on Monday.
The 7 pressure groups are–the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), includes the Achik Progressive Approach (APA), Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), United Achik Social Economic Justice Forum (UASEJF), Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM), Confederation of Ri-Bhoi People (CORP), and Jaintia National Council (JNC).
Their primary demands include the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP), the enforcement of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, and amendments to the Presidential Scheduled Tribes Order of 1950.
Speaking to media, HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem highlighted concerns regarding the Scheduled Tribes Order of 1950. He said that the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Orders (Amendment) Act, 1976 had added around 50-60 tribes to the list of recognised Scheduled Tribes in Meghalaya, some of which do not exist in the state. Certain tribes that have rights in their own states should not have the same status in Meghalaya.
“We want the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950, which defines Scheduled Tribes in relation to states to be amended so that the indigenous tribes of Meghalaya-Khasi, Jaintia, Garo, and other permanent residents are duly recognised,” he stated.
Regarding the pending 125th Amendment Bill, Synrem said that CoMSO had already written to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs in 2020, urging the bill’s approval.
“The bill has already been circulated, but it has not been passed by Parliament yet. We want it to be passed, as it contains provisions that will benefit us,” he added.
The pressure groups are set to intensify efforts to address these long-pending issues and push for legislative action.
Synrem said that a second meeting is scheduled in Tura to elect office bearers.
