Medanta Hospital Shocker: Air Hostess on Ventilator, Sexually Assaulted by Hospital Staff, Nurses Looked On

First Published: 16th April, 2025 15:05 IST

Victim alleged that some hospital staff sexually assaulted her on April 6, when she was on a ventilator and in semi-conscious condition

In a deeply disturbing incident, a 46-year-old air hostess on ventilator support was allegedly sexually assaulted at posh and well-known Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. What is even more shocking is that, according to the victim, two nurses were present at the scene but did not intervene.

The woman, who is from West Bengal and was in Gurugram for a workshop, was admitted to the hospital on April 5 after she fell ill following a swim in the pool of the hotel she was staying in.

After being discharged on April 13, she told her husband about the incident and lodged a complaint at Sadar police station stating that some hospital staff sexually assaulted her on April 6, when she was on a ventilator and in semi-conscious condition.

Gurugram Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita the next day, reports said.

“She was not in a condition to speak or resist the man’s advances because of her weakened condition. There were two nurses in the room, but they did not intervene,” Times of India reported, citing the FIR.

The Medanta Hospital in a statement said it has been fully cooperating with the police probe. It, however, said no allegations have been substantiated so far.

“We have been made aware of a complaint from a patient and have been fully cooperating with the investigations conducted by the relevant authorities. At this stage, no allegations have been substantiated, and all relevant documents, including CCTV footage from the hospital for the time period in question, have been handed over to the police.” reads the statement.

The Hindustan Times report quoting Deputy commissioner of police (East) Gaurav said a special investigation team led by Sadar ACP Yashwant has been constituted given the seriousness of the allegations. “The team has collected CCTV camera footage from the hospital and is questioning employees who may have interacted with the patient during her stay,” he told The Hindustan Times.

The DCP added that the investigation was being conducted from all angles and, considering the sensitivity of the case, further details could not be disclosed at this stage.

The case has sparked outrage over patient safety, institutional negligence, and the urgent need for accountability in medical care settings.

If the sexual assault is proved right, this will be a big blot on the image of Medanta Hospital known for its worldclass medical facilities.
