Massive Landslide Near Phesama Cuts Off Manipur’s Lifeline NH-2; Heavy Vehicles Diverted, Public Warned

First Published: 2nd June, 2025 14:47 IST

The latest road collapse near Phesama has now completely closed the highway, leaving no passage for vehicles.

Due to continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days, Manipur’s lifeline, National Highway 2, has been completely cut off following a massive landslide near Phesama in Nagaland. The landslide, which stretches over 25 meters, occurred along the stretch between Kohima and Mao Gate, causing a major disruption in road connectivity.

The situation has worsened as earlier landslides and mudslides had already disrupted traffic in several parts of Senapati and Kangpokpi districts in Manipur. The latest road collapse near Phesama has now completely closed the highway, leaving no passage for vehicles.

In response, the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima has issued a travel advisory. All heavy vehicles traveling towards Kohima from Manipur have been instructed to stop at Khuzama. Similarly, heavy vehicles heading to southern Manipur from Dimapur must halt at Sechü-Subza.

Authorities have also announced alternative routes for light motor vehicles. These vehicles can now take the Demori Cove JCC–Kisama–Phesama stretch. Southern Manipur-bound vehicles may use the BSF Camp–Chakhabama–Kidima–Viswema–Mao Gate route.

Officials have further warned the public to stay away from the affected electric poles and wires in the landslide-hit areas. The power department will carry out necessary safety measures in the coming days.

Efforts are underway to clear the debris and restore normal traffic flow at the earliest.
