Massive Fire Destroys Over 30 Houses in Guwahati’s Gandhi Basti; Several LPG Cylinders Explode

As many as eight LPG cylinders exploded one after another, causing the fire to spread rapidly to nearby homes.
A devastating fire broke out around 11 AM on Thursday at Anu Baruah Path in Gandhi Basti Tiniali, Guwahati, completely gutting more than 30 houses and leaving several families homeless.
Thick plumes of black smoke billowed out from the site, quickly covering the entire area in smoke and panic. Eyewitnesses said the fire started inside the residential complex of one Munna Newar, who had rented out rows of one and two-room houses. Around 20 houses inside Newar’s compound were completely destroyed by the fire.
As many as eight LPG cylinders exploded one after another, causing the fire to spread rapidly to nearby homes. The flames leapt onto another row of around 10 houses rented out by Aminur Rahman, most of which were also reduced to ashes.
Most of the victims were daily wage labourers and small-time traders. Many of them were not at home when the fire broke out and returned only to find their houses burned to the ground.
“I have lost everything. I’m a daily wage earner and my husband drives an auto. We worked day and night to survive. Now everything has turned to ash,” a devastated woman told reporters.
Panic gripped the area as residents scrambled to save whatever belongings they could while the flames spread from one closely-packed house to another. Property worth several lakh rupees was lost in the fire. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
Locals expressed anger over the delayed arrival of fire tenders, alleging that the extent of the damage could have been reduced had they responded sooner. Firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour before they finally brought it under control.
Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the fire, but preliminary reports point to a cylinder leak or explosion as the likely trigger. An investigation is underway.
