Massive Crackdown: Assam Rifles, Arunachal Police Launch Operation Against ULFA (I)

First Published: 3rd March, 2025 14:16 IST

Security forces remain on high alert as the operation intensifies, aiming to neutralize the threat posed by the insurgent group.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the Assam Rifles and Arunachal Pradesh Police have launched a massive counter-insurgency operation to flush out a heavily armed group of ULFA (I) militants hiding inside the Manabhum Reserve Forest, which stretches across Namsai and Changlang districts of eastern Arunachal Pradesh.

Confirming the development, Namsai Superintendent of Police, Sange Thinley, stated that security forces have sealed all entry and exit routes of the reserve forest to prevent the militants from escaping. Sources revealed that the group, consisting of 8 to 10 armed cadres, had infiltrated Arunachal Pradesh from its bases in Myanmar, allegedly with the intent of carrying out subversive activities and extortion.

It has come to light that at least eight individuals in the Chowkham area have received extortion demands from ULFA (I), with the militants directing them to pay sums ranging from Rs. 15 lakh to Rs. 1 crore. Additionally, sources suggest that another key motive behind their infiltration is to collect their share of illegal earnings from poppy cultivation in the region.

Security forces remain on high alert as the operation intensifies, aiming to neutralize the threat posed by the insurgent group.
