Maring Students’ Union Opposes Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing, Calls it a Colonial Imposition on Naga Territories

First Published: 13th March, 2025 10:33 IST

MSU Opposes Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing, asserted that Indian govt cannot unilaterally enforce decisions that significantly impact.

The Maring Students’ Union (MSU) has strongly opposed the ongoing border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border, particularly in Naga ancestral lands. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent directive to expedite the fencing process in Manipur and Nagaland has raised serious concerns, the MSU stated in a press release.

According to the MSU, the border dividing Naga territories is a colonial construct that fails to reflect the historical, cultural, and traditional realities of the Naga people. For generations, Naga communities have maintained familial, social, and economic ties across this boundary. The MSU criticized the hasty construction of the fence without the free, prior, and informed consent of the indigenous Naga people, calling it a violation of their rights and dignity.

MSU Opposes Indo-Myanmar Border Fencing: MSU asserted that the Indian government cannot unilaterally enforce decisions that significantly impact the Naga people’s lives and lands. Such arbitrary actions, they warned, risk escalating tensions, disrupting age-old ties, and fostering resentment among affected communities.

The student body emphasized that the Indo-Naga peace process remains ongoing. Any unilateral move that overlooks the concerns of the Naga people could undermine efforts to achieve a just and lasting solution, they added.

MSU have demanded an immediate suspension of the border fencing project until comprehensive dialogue is held with all stakeholders, including the indigenous Naga people. They cautioned that ignoring these concerns could destabilize the region.

Reaffirming their commitment to defending the land, identity, and dignity of the Naga people, the MSU vowed to remain vigilant and active against what they describe as an unjust imposition.
