Manipur: Youths Surrender Arms Within Days of Governor’s 7-Day Deadline

Youths from both the hill and valley districts of Manipur voluntarily surrendered a large cache of illegal arms and ammunition today, within 3 days of Governor AK Bhalla issuing a seven-day ultimatum, urging armed individuals to lay down their weapons or face strict consequences.
A group from Kakching district handed over weapons and protective gear reportedly looted from the Manipur Police Armoury. The surrendered items included a .303 rifle with a magazine, thirteen rounds of .303 ammunition, four bulletproof vests, five bulletproof plates, and four helmets. These were submitted to the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kakching district.
Simultaneously, a tear gas gun was surrendered at G. Sapermeina Police Station in Kangpokpi district, marking another step in the ongoing crackdown on illegal arms possession.
Since imposing the President’s Rule in Manipur, joint security forces have intensified efforts to recover illicit arms. So far, authorities have seized 82 weapons, and 128.9 kilograms of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and arrested 72 cadres linked to various unlawful outfits across the state.
Additionally, members of the Zomi and Kuki communities surrendered a significant cache of weapons to the Assam Rifles, CRPF, and police. The arms included an M-16 rifle, 9mm carbine country rifles, a launcher, 64 sticks of gelatine explosives, and ten mortar bombs.
The surrendered arms were displayed at the 27 Sector Assam Rifles campus, with district administration officials, police led by SP Prakhar Pandey, CRPF personnel, and Assam Rifles officials in attendance. The development marks a crucial stride towards stabilising the region and reinforcing law and order.
