Manipur Violence: Centre Orders Telcos to Keep Call Records for 5 Years

The Central Government has issued a directive to telecom operators in Manipur to keep call records of all residents for a period of five years amid rising violence. This measure is aimed at tracking possible links between local militants and extremists across the Myanmar border.
According to a report by The Tribune, normally, call data records (CDRs) are stored by telecom companies for six months. However, sources revealed that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has instructed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to enforce this extended retention period for the state of Manipur. This decision reportedly stems from concerns over escalating violence and a need to monitor activities of wanted elements in the state.
The directive was communicated during a recent meeting between telecom operators and DoT officials, according to individuals familiar with the development. Officials believe that retaining CDRs for a longer period will help in establishing a comprehensive timeline of violent incidents and in identifying key individuals involved.
Violence and protests have once again rocked Manipur since November 7 this year with incidents of arson targeting the homes of political leaders. In response, the Central Government deployed additional paramilitary forces to restore order.
The situation remains tense, curfew has been clamped in Valley districts and the ban on mobile internet and data services in nine districts has been extended for an additional two days, up to November 27.
