At least 9 people have been killed in fresh violence that struck Jiribam District along the Manipur-Assam border early this morning.
The incident occurred around 5:30 AM in the Ningthemkhunou locality of Ningthembam village. Reports indicate that the few gunmen forcibly entered a home and shot an elderly man dead. His wife and daughter escaped unharmed.
Narrating the horrific incident, the wife of the deceased man said, “I was in the kitchen preparing breakfast while my daughter was sweeping the courtyard. Suddenly, three gunmen came, they stopped us outside before entering the house and shooting my husband dead in his bed”.
Soon, villagers retaliated and a fierce exchange of gunfire ensued, lasting approximately one hour at Rashidpur areas which lies between Nungchapi (Ningthemkhunou) and Seijang villages killing 8 more people.
As tension escalates in the region, authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
Since September 1, 2024, 12 people have died – 2 in drone attack in Koutruk and Senjam Chirang areas of Imphal West district, one priest died in the rocket attack on September 6 when the rocket landed at the ancestral home of Manipur’s first Chief Minister M Koireng in Moirang town and 9 in Jiribam this morning.
Since May 3 last year when violence broke in Manipur, over 250 people have died and an equal number or more have been injured and over 60,000 people have been displaced. At least 60,000 central forces have been deployed to contain the flare ups that Manipur has been seeing since last year.
