Manipur Unrest: 23 Arrested, Situation Volatile, Curfew in 7 Districts and Net Ban Continues

Situation continues to be tense and volatile today, a day after Imphal, the capital city of Manipur saw unprecedented violence as angry people set ablaze, ransacked and vandalised houses of MLAs and Ministers protesting the gruesome killing of 3 children and 3 women.
Protesters are out on the streets of Imphal today defying the indefinite curfew imposed yesterday evening.
At least 23 people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in ransacking and setting fire to houses of MLAs and Ministers and the private residence of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Taking to X, Manipur Police on Sunday wrote, “On 16.11.2024, irate mobs have targeted various houses and properties of public representatives including Ministers and MLAs of the State in Imphal. Police have resorted to firing tear gas shells etc. to disperse the mob. Security forces including Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed in Imphal to strengthen the security in the town area. Flag marches have been conducted. 08 (eight) persons have been injured in the process of mob dispersal.”
“Further, 23 persons who were part of the mob indulging in ransacking and arson of the houses above have been arrested from Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishnupur Districts and recovered 01 (one) .32 pistol, 07 rounds of SBBL, 08 nos. of mobile phones from their possession. Total curfew has been immediately clamped in the town until further orders. Internet and mobile data services have been suspended for 02 (two) days immediately,” police added.
“SsP/ COs have been deployed on ground to manage the law-and-order situation. Senior officers are critically monitoring the situation round the clock”, Police further added.
The capital city of Imphal witnessed unprecedented violence throughout the day yesterday.
Angry mobs attacked the residences of several MLAs and CM N Biren Singh. Among the first to bear the brunt of the peoples’ anger were RK Imo Singh – Sagolband MLA and son-in-law of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, Dr. Sapam Ranjan – Health and Public Relations Minister and Konthoujam MLA, Thongam Biswajit- Power Minister and Thongju MLA, K Govindas-PWD Minister and Bishnupur MLA , Nishikant Sapam, Keishamthong MLA, Thangjam Arun Kumar, Wangkhei MLA, Sapam Kunjakeswar, Patsoi MLA, Khwairakpam Raghumani, Uripok MLA, Soraisham Kebi Devi, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa MLA, and Khumukcham Joykisan, Thangmeiband MLA whose houses were vandalised and properties set ablaze.
S Kebi Devi had a narrow escape as she was whisked away by security forces to a safe place minutes before her house was attacked and set on fire by protestors.
Violence erupted yesterday morning after the bodies of the 3 women and 3 children who were abducted on November 11 from Jiribam was found early yesterday morning.
Indefinite curfew has been imposed in 7 districts of Manipur- Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Churachandpur and Kangpokpi and internet has been suspended till tomorrow.
