Manipur Signage Row: From the helipad, the Governor was driven 300 metres to the Raj Bhavan amid tight security.

The situation in Manipur’s capital Imphal turned tense after hundreds of protestors lined up from the Tulihal Airport to Raj Bhavan preventing the movement of Mnaipur Governor Ajay Bhalla who was flying in to the state from New Delhi on Monday evening.

With roads blocked by protestors from the airport at Tulihal to the city upto the Raj Bhavan, Governor Bhalla was forced to take a chopper from the airport to Raj Bhavan, a stretch of just 7 kms.

The protestors are seeking an apology from Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on the issue of ‘Manipur’ name being concealed on a state transport bus on May 20 that was on way to Ukhrul for the Shirui Lily festival. The bus was ferrying journalists from Imphal to cover the festival that was held after a gap of 2 years due to the violence that rocked Manipur since May 2023.

Yesterday, protestors formed a human chain from the airport departure gate to the Raj Bhavan, holding placards with slogans such as “Manipur’s identity is non-negotiable”.

After landing at the airport from New Delhi, the Governor boarded an Army chopper to avoid the protestors. The chopper landed at a helipad in the Kangla Fort complex.

And from the helipad, the Governor was driven about 300 metres to the Raj Bhavan amid tight security.

It needs to be mentioned that Governor Bhalla has ordered an investigation into the incident, but the COCOMI has been adamant demanding an apology from the Governor for the bus incident.

The organisation has also demanded the resignation of Chief Secretary P.K. Singh, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh and Director-General of Police Rajiv Singh, holding them responsible for the incident which allegedly undermined the identity of Manipur, its name, pride and respect.
