Is the Manipur Police helpless? This question has arisen after top Manipur Police officers today addressed a news conference where they urged people to let policemen perform their duties.

This statement comes a day after Manipur Police commandoes in 4 valley districts laid down their weapons demanding they be allowed by the authorities to retaliate when attacked by armed gunmen or miscreants.

The arms down by the commandos continued for the second day today.

The Manipur Police top brass during their media address today said if the police is not allowed to do their mandated duty, the government will have to call in central forces to maintain law and order and this may result in re-imposition of the draconian AFSPA.

IGP K Kabib said, “Our police officer was doing his lawfully mandated duty. We, our police department from the rank of DGP to Village Defence Force, are condemning strongly the targeting of the police officer and his family. We request the elders of the society not to support such kind of incidents. If police is threatened, then we will not be able to work. Then what will be the alternative? AFSPA and such other things will come up again. The armed forces will come. It is the police who has the advantage of knowing the local public and able to understand better as to what is happening in Manipur. So we request all the citizens of Manipur please help us, if any of our officers is involved in any wrong thing, you are always welcome to give a complaint, and we will do whatever as per the law. But do not take law in your hand because it will create more and more problem only. We also condemn the character assassination of our officers and the police in the social media. Whoever does such things will also be booked under relevant sections of the law. With this I once again request all the public of Manipur for cooperation.

IGP IK. Muivah said, “The police are always doing things as per the law and ensuring the safety and security of all the citizens of the state. Now, if the civil police are not able to perform their normal duties due to lack of co-operation from the public or obstructions from various CSOs or organisations, then normally what happens, as in all other states of India also, the central security forces automatically have to come in to assist, to help and that means the CRPF, BSF, Assam Rifles, Army all have to come in to assist.

That will result in a situation which is far more undesirable, which will be far from the normal situation, that is prevailing in the state.”
