On October 18, 1947, Manipur formed its first government and held a public Assembly
People in Manipur observed the 76th Manipur National Day, a day that holds special significance as it marks the birth of democracy in Manipur. What many may not know is that Manipur achieved independence from British Colonial Rule on August 14, 1947. At that time, Manipur was a Princely State with its own Constitution, Assembly, and Cabinet Ministers.
On October 18, 1947, Manipur formed its first government and held a public Assembly, presided over by the Chief Minister and the King of Manipur. This made Manipur the first democratic princely state and republic in South East Asia and South Asia.
To honour this historic day in Manipur’s history, people in the state gathered at Khongjom in Thoubal District. A public Assembly was held to pay tribute to the day of the first Assembly Session in 1947. The Assembly was led by Ningthouja Lancha, the Moderator of FAMBEI (Assembly), and it included leaders from various places who had been displaced from their homes due to violence in the state. The parents of two students who tragically lost their lives in an incident involving armed individuals in July this year also took part in the Assembly.
