Manipur MP Bimol Akoijam Barred from Visiting Market in His Own Constituency, Slams “Unconstitutional” Buffer Zone

Inner Manipur Lok Sabha MP Bimol Akoijam has expressed serious concerns after security forces stopped him from visiting Phougakchou-Ikhai Makha Leikai Keithel in Bishnupur district on Sunday evening. The market, located within his parliamentary constituency, falls inside the buffer zone between Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts.
The MP alleged that the enforcement of what he called an “imaginary and unconstitutional” buffer zone is part of a communally driven agenda that is deepening divisions in the strife-torn state.
Bimol Akoijam, in a strongly worded post on social media platform X, stated that despite the presence of a large number of security personnel, including the Indian Army, he was blocked from entering the market area. He further added that civilians from other communities, including the Pangals, were being allowed to pass through the same area without any restrictions.
Taking to X, the MP condemned the act, saying, “Tellingly, civilians belonging to other communities (such as Pangals) are allowed to travel through the same place right in front of me, a Member of Parliament of the largest democracy in the world!”
He criticised the concept of the buffer zone, calling it a “clandestine mechanism” through which the state continues to nurture a communal divide in Manipur. According to him, such practices erode democratic values and marginalize the rights of elected representatives.
Calling for immediate corrective measures, Akoijam emphasized that only “honest and determined efforts” could resolve the ongoing crisis in Manipur. “Lies and a cynical approach will not help. What we need is truth, justice, and peace,” he said.
It may be mentioned here that the Ministry of Home Affairs had earlier initiated steps to ensure free movement across all parts of Manipur. A few months ago, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had directed authorities to allow unrestricted movement and take strict action against those creating barriers. However, the ground reality remains unchanged.
In another development, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday held a another round of meeting with valley-based Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in New Delhi on Monday to discuss ways to restore normalcy and peace in the state. Before departing for the meeting, CSO leaders told reporters that they would raise the issue of restricted movement and press the Centre to ensure that all citizens of Manipur can move freely without fear or discrimination.
