Lamnumthem Singson and Nganthoi Kongbrailatpam Sharma were among the 10 cabin crew members on board AI 171.

Manipur mourns the deaths of two of it’s young, bright, smart and intelligent women. Lamnumthem Singson and Nganthoi Kongbrailatpam Sharma were among the 10 cabin crew members on board AI 171, the ill-fated London-bound Air India flight that crashed yesterday afternoon in Ahmedabad.

Lamnumthem Singson, an internally displaced person (IDP) due to the Manipur ethnic violence, had been living with her family in Kangpokpi after they were forced to flee Old Lambulane in Imphal in May 2023. Singson had lost her father a few years ago, and her mother, who raised her and her brothers alone, remains unaware of her daughter’s death. Family members have not informed her yet, fearing the news would completely devastate her.

Singson was the only daughter of the family. She always wanted to fly high. Now, a young and promising life has been cut short.

Northeast Live visited the grieving family and learned that a cousin brother currently in Delhi will travel to Ahmedabad for a DNA test, as the victims’ bodies were charred beyond recognition.

There is sadness at the house of Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma in Thoubal too. Another young and bright life gone too soon. When the news reached their home, her father was in a state of complete shock, unable to speak.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh took to X to express his grief, “It is heartbreaking to share that two young cabin crew members from Manipur, Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma and Lamnumthem Singson, were among those who lost their lives in today’s Air India crash in Ahmedabad.

Both were full of life, serving with dedication and pride. Their sudden passing is a huge loss for their families, friends, and for all of us back home.
May their souls rest in peace and may their loved ones find the strength to get through this unimaginable pain.”

Taking to X, Kangpokpi AC MLA Nemcha Kipgen wrote, “Deeply saddened by the tragic crash of Air India flight near Ahmedabad yesterday where 241 were feared dead. Extend my condolences to all the families of the victims grieving this immense loss including the two daughters from Manipur- Lamnunthem Singson and Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma who worked with the Tata-owned airline as flight attendants. May their souls rest in peace in the eternal abode of Almighty.”

The Thadou Students’ Association (TSA) also offered condolences in a heartfelt statement:

“The Thadou Students’ Association (TSA) expresses deep sorrow over the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on June 12, 2025, which claimed the lives of many, including two young cabin crew from Manipur—Miss Lamnumthem Singson of the Thadou community and Miss Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma of the Meitei community. Lamnumthem Singson had recently joined Air India as cabin crew in 2024, and her untimely death is a great loss to her family and the Thadou community.”
