Manipur MLAs Preparing to Submit Letter to PM for a Popular Government?

Reliable sources revealed that around 19 MLAs have already signed the letter.
In a dramatic turn of events, at least 20 Manipur MLAs including members of the BJP and NPP, are understood to be preparing to submit a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to put in place a democratically elected government and end President’s Rule in the violence-hit state.
This move comes just two months after President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Reliable sources revealed that around 19 MLAs have already signed the letter, while four others, who are currently in Delhi, are yet to sign. A few MLAs had even travelled from Imphal to the national capital recently to collect their signatures. However, not all BJP MLAs are on board with this initiative. A section of the party continues to remain divided, with some members refusing to sign the letter, indicating an ongoing rift within the BJP’s state unit.
Public pressure for the restoration of a democratically elected government has mounted in the state, especially after the President’s Rule imposed on February 13. Since then, several BJP MLAs have openly criticised the governance style of former CM N Biren Singh.
It may be noted that the National People’s Party (NPP) also withdrew support from the Biren Singh-led government on November 17, 2024, citing his failure to control the continued unrest.
Amid these tensions, former CM Biren Singh met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on February 9 and returned to Imphal the same day. He submitted his resignation to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, leading to the imposition of President’s Rule a few days later.
Currently, the BJP holds 37 seats in the Manipur Legislative Assembly, while the NPP has six. The MLAs behind the letter claim that over 20 members from BJP and NPP are backing the demand to form a new popular government.
However, Manipur NPP President Yumnam Joykumar has denied any knowledge of such a letter or the involvement of NPP MLAs. He said, “If the MLAs are advocating for a re-election, it is their personal decision.”
The state has remained in turmoil since May 3, 2023, when large-scale violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The ethnic conflict has left deep scars and disrupted governance, forcing many to call for political and administrative intervention.
