Excited, villagers said, “Our long-cherished dream for water has materialised”.

It took 69 long years for the Lairouching village in Senapati district of Manipur to get clean drinking water supply.

The villagers are now celebrating as they finally got the first drinking water supply in the village under the NDB Project of PHED, Manipur. Established in 1956, Lairouching villagers said that they had never received drinking water earlier.

The drinking water supply project was inaugurated by MLA Losii Dikho in the presence of R. Joel Rangnamei, Executive Engineer of PHED, Senapati.

Ng. Joseph, Principal, P. P. Christian Eng High School, Lairouching in his words of appreciation stated that all the villagers were so happy to behold the coming of water supply to the village that they don’t have enough words to express their joy and gratitude to all concerned. He stated that the village women always used to fetch water from a particular pond that is at least 1 km away from the village.

The village leader also stated that Lairouching villagers always used to suffer from water-borne epidemic every year. The villages faced water scarcity every year during the dry season.

The inauguration of the drinking water supply in the village will ease the women’s burden and also improve the living standard of the villagers, he said.

MLA Dikho said that now with the drinking water supply, the villagers should now plan to develop the area as a tourist spot as the area has two rivers and also develop the village as the cleanest in the region.

R. Joel urged the villagers to pay compulsory taxes to the Government at the rate of Rs. 100 per household for every water tap connection. Of the Rs 100, Rs. 80 will be utilised for maintenance of the project.
