Manipur Journalists Stage Sit-In Protest Over Government Silence on Guwaltabi Incident

AMWJU and the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) organized a protest rally and submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur.
The journalist community in Manipur on Monday staged a sit-in protest, strongly condemning the government’s continued silence over the controversial Guwaltabi incident.
The incident took place on May 20, when a group of journalists traveling to cover the Shirui Lily Festival were stopped by security personnel at Guwaltabi. The security forces allegedly instructed the journalists to remove the “MANIPUR” signage from a transport bus provided by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR). The incident sparked widespread outrage among media professionals across the state.
On the same day, the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM) organized a protest rally and submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur. They demanded an inquiry into the incident and strict action against those responsible.
In response, the state government formed a two-member inquiry committee comprising the Home Commissioner and the Secretary of Information Technology. The committee submitted its findings to the Governor. However, the government has not taken any action against those involved and has not made the inquiry report public.
As a mark of protest, journalists wore black badges and held a sit-in demonstration at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai from 10 AM to 1 PM today. The protest was jointly organized by AMWJU and EGM to reiterate their demand for the release of the inquiry report and accountability from the government.
Both journalist bodies have warned that if the government continues to remain silent, they will convene a joint meeting soon to decide on more intensified forms of protest.
Journalists present at the protest expressed disappointment over the government’s indifferent attitude and urged the authorities to uphold press freedom and take responsibility for the incident.
