Journalists in Imphal are up in arms against Manipur police following an assault on their colleague during a protest by the Internally displaced people today. The protest by internally displaced people at Singjamei in Imphal east turned tense today, with police resorting to blank firing and firing of tear gas shells. As per sources, such was the police aggression during the rally that even a journalist was assaulted. A senior reporter of a local cable TV channel was allegedly beaten up mercilessly by the police while he was covering the IDP protest. As per eye witnesses, the journalist was kicked on the chest and also assaulted on the face despite flashing his identity card. The journalist was rushed to the hospital following the assault.
