Manipur: JNIMS Resident Doctors Boycott Emergency and Routine Services Over Unjust Fee Hike

First Published: 26th May, 2025 11:37 IST

While enforcing the strike, the resident doctors expressed their empathy for the ongoing humanitarian situation in the state.

The resident doctors of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Manipur under the banner of the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA), have begun a complete boycott of emergency services from 9 AM today. This decision follows the expiry of a five-day extended deadline set by the RDA to roll back the postgraduate course fee hike from Rs. 3 lakh to the original Rs. 1 lakh for three years for the October 2022 batch.

In a release Resident Doctors’ Association stated, “Following the end of extended deadline of 5 days set to revert back the annual fee for post graduate course of JNIMS from 3 lakhs for 3 years to the original fee structure of 1 lakh for 3 years from batch of October 2022 on the account of the unjust fee hike in the year 2022, we, the RDA JNIMS, after a general body meeting including all the post graduate resident doctors, have unanimously decided to boycott the emergency services commencing from 9 AM of 26th May, 2025 (Monday). The boycott of routine services that was enforced on 21st May 2025 (Wednesday) will remain in effect.”

The resident doctors had already been boycotting routine services since May 21, and with today’s move, all emergency and non-emergency services now stand suspended.

The release further said that, they held a general body meeting with all postgraduate resident doctors and unanimously agreed to intensify the protest after repeated efforts to address the issue yielded no results. The doctors have condemned the 2022 fee hike as unjust and financially burdensome for medical students.

While enforcing the strike, the resident doctors expressed their empathy for the ongoing humanitarian situation in the state. They assured the public that they remain committed to providing urgent medical care to those truly in need despite the ongoing agitation.

The RDA has urged the authorities to take immediate action and fulfill their demands to restore the original fee structure, failing which the strike will continue indefinitely.
