He warned that climate-induced disasters such as floods and droughts could further exacerbate malnutrition and the spread of bacterial infections.
In a major step towards climate-resilient healthcare, the “Green Hospital Initiative” is being introduced in hospitals across Manipur to mitigate health risks associated with climate change.
The initiative was highlighted during the 1st AHPICON NE II 2025 conclave, organized by the Association of Healthcare Providers (India) (AHPI) at the City Convention Centre, Imphal, on Saturday.
Speaking at the conclave, Palin Khundongbam, President of AHPI Manipur Chapter, expressed deep concern over the increasing burden of airborne, waterborne, and vector-borne diseases, heat-related illnesses, and mental health challenges due to climate change.
He stressed the urgent need for healthcare reforms to build a sustainable and climate-resilient health system.
“We are discussing ways to mitigate and adapt to the impact of climate change on human health. Our discussions have covered bacterial-borne diseases, resilient hospital infrastructure, and other critical issues,” he said.
Khundongbam cited alarming predictions from the World Health Organization (WHO), stating that between 2030 and 2050, climate change could cause an additional 250,000 deaths per year due to malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress.
“Climate change has the potential to severely affect public health, and the World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that between 2030 and 2050, it could cause approximately 250,000 additional deaths per year due to undernutrition, malaria, diarrhea, and heat stress,” he added.
He warned that climate-induced disasters such as floods and droughts could further exacerbate malnutrition and the spread of bacterial infections.
“This is an alarming situation, and we must work together to address it. Climate change will lead to scarcity of resources, floods, droughts, and increased malnutrition while rising temperatures will contribute to the spread of bacterial-borne diseases. Urgent action is needed to build a climate-resilient healthcare system,” said Palin Khundongbam.
Experts at the conclave emphasized that the health sector must be proactive in tackling climate-related challenges before they spiral out of control.
The conclave aimed to create a concrete roadmap for healthcare policies, ensuring that discussions lead to actionable strategies for a more resilient and sustainable healthcare system in Manipur.
