It also demanded an independent investigation into repeated violations of the buffer zones in conflict-hit areas.

An indefinite Shutdown has begun in Manipur’s Churachandpur district as an act of condemnation over the killing of Hoikholhing Haokip, wife of the village chief of Langchingmanbi in Churachandpur district.

Village volunteers and residents were seen patrolling early today while the streets wear deserted looks. Shops and businesses also keep their shutters down as the shutdown gets underway.

Meanwhile, a 24-hr shutdown has also been called in Kangpokpi district starting from 1pm today. The decision to impose shutdown was endorsed by the Committee on Tribal Unity and joint CSOs of Churachandpur.

The ITLF called for concrete measures from the central government to ensure the safety of tribal lives and lands. It also demanded an independent investigation into repeated violations of the buffer zones in conflict-hit areas.

According to a press release issued by Manipur Police, the incident occurred on Thursday during a search operation in and around Langchingmanbi, Heichanglok, and western areas of Phubala village. The operation was launched after Ningthoujam Biren Singh, a farmer from Phubala Awang Maning Leikai, sustained a bullet injury in his left arm while working in his paddy field. Police said an unknown armed miscreant fired at the farmer.

During the security operation, armed miscreants opened fire on the security forces, who retaliated. Amid the crossfire, Hoikholhing Haokip was found dead with a bullet injury. Security personnel identified her as the wife of the village chief of Langchingmanbi. Authorities transported her body to the District Hospital in Churachandpur for legal formalities.

Police confirmed that cases have been registered, and an investigation is currently underway. Combined security forces are continuing search operations to track down those involved. Officials stated that every possible effort is being made to bring the culprits to justice.

The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights has also strongly condemned the killing of Mrs. Hoikholhing Haokip, calling it a horrific act of violence.
