In a bid to keep the famous Loktak Lake of Manipur clean, 15 hydraulic excavators would be used of which nine excavators were launched today by Chief Minister N Biren Singh at an event held in Imphal this morning.

Chief minister N Biren Singh speaking to Northeast Live after the launch event said that altogether 15 hydraulic excavators would be used to keep the Lake, a tourist hotspot and South Asia’s largest fresh water lake clean. Of the 15 excavators, 9 have already arrived and the remaining machineries would arrive soon.

The state government is taking special care to keep the Lake clean as dignitaries attending the G20 Summit 2023 would be visiting the Lake.

“So the state government’s target is to give a different look with significant changes to the Loktak-Lake before February 2023”, the CM said.

As far as cleaning of dense bio-mass deposited at the Lake is concerned, Loktak Development Authority (LDA) an undertaking of state government, has put into service various machineries since 2008. The Lake is famous for its unique floating phumdis (heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil and organic matter at various stages of decomposition).

Chief Minister Singh is confident that with new high end machineries being added, the cleaning process would speed up to a large extent.

The event was attended by council of ministers, MLAs, chief secretary Rajesh Kumar, Chairman LDA M Ashnikumar and Project director Loktak Development Authority Bhagaton Singh.
