Terming the delay “a matter of serious concern,” the court granted the NIA a brief extension after it requested time to submit its findings.

In a significant development, the High Court of Manipur has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to file a detailed progress report, including a charge sheet, in connection with the abduction and brutal killings of six individuals including three women and three minor children in Jiribam on last November.

The directive was issued on Monday by a division bench comprising Chief Justice K. Somashekar and Justice Ahanthem Bimol Singh, following a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by petitioner Soram Tekendrajit. The PIL seeks justice for the victims and calls for urgent action against those responsible.

The court noted that while an FIR was lodged on the day of the incident, no progress report or charge sheet has been submitted by the NIA, even after more than seven months. Terming the delay “a matter of serious concern,” the court granted the NIA a brief extension after it requested time to submit its findings.

The matter has been scheduled for the next hearing on July 24.

It may be mentioned here that 6 individuals – 3 children, one as young as just 10 months old, and 3 women, one a 60-year-old, all from the same family were abducted on November 11 from Jiribam and four days later on November 15 late night, their bodies found – 3 bodies were found floating in the Barak river and three bodies were found stuffed in gunny bags.

Among the victims, two-year-old Laishram Chingkhei Nganba Singh suffered a gunshot wound to the face, had his right eye missing, and showed signs of blunt force trauma. His mother, 25-year-old Laishram Heitombi Devi, was shot four times, with bullets fatally damaging her heart and lungs. Sixty-eight-year-old Yurembam Rani Devi sustained five bullet wounds to her skull, chest, abdomen, and arm.
