Manipur Guv, CM leads the state in paying rich tributes to 1891 Anglo-Manipur War heroes on Khongjom Day

People of Manipur led by Governor Anusuiya Uikey and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh today paid rich and befitting tributes to known and unknown heroes of Anglo-Manipur War, 1891 on the occasion of Khongjom Day.

Khongjom Day is observed every year in commemoration of the Battle of Kheba Ching, Khongjom fought between British and Manipuris on April 23, 1891, to pay homage to the valiant heroes of Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891.

Major Paona Brajabashi, Major Chongtham Mia, Chinglen Sana, Khumbong Major and many others stood against the imperial might of the British Army in 1891 to defend Manipur’s sovereignty.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, in his message to the people said, “Khongjom and Kheba Ching would always remind us about the tales of glory, patriotism and indomitable courage. On this awe-inspiring day, let us once again remember our heroes who made the supreme sacrifice while defending the sovereignty of Manipur. Let us resolve to stand in unison for a united Manipur and resolve to work together in facing all evils that stand before us.”

Attendees of Khongjom Day observation laid floral wreaths at Khongjom War Memorial erected at Kheba Ching, Khongjom in Thoubal district and also at statue of Major Paona Brajabashi.

A guard of honour, gun salute, observing two minutes silence, offering of Tarpon at Khongjom River, recital of Khongjom Parva among others were the main highlights of the observance.
