Manipur Govt takes strong cognizance of threats against Churachandpur DC and SP, suspends 8 officers

Manipur government has taken strong cognizance of the personal threats issued to the Churachandpur Deputy Commission (DC) and Superintendent of Police (SP) following the ransacking and arson of the DC and SP offices on February 15 and suspended as many as 8 officers in conection with the case.
On the basis of preliminary evidence, the government has suspended 7 officers of various communities from Imphal and one officer from Churachandpur, said the State Home Department in a statement.
The State Home Department stated that the incident has caused a lot of mental agony, not only to the two officers in Churachandpur, but among the entire team working throughout the period of violence for the welfare of the displaced people across the state.
Post the unfortunate incident on February 15, the DC and SP were even giving an ultimatum to leave the district, and close government offices by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF). Moreover, Deputy Commissioner’ official residence was ransacked and burnt, including all the official records, documents kept therein, the release said.
The government said that it has already initiated the process of reconstruction of damaged documents from the 15th February incident, and the government is committed to ensure timely relief.
The State government responding to accusation of delaying relief material disbursement, post the February 15 incident, sated that relief materials and essential have always been ensure and released in a timely manner for all relief camps, through the local Civil Society Organizations.
It has also urged everyone to support the District Administration in it is effort to support all the displaced persons.
At least two people were killed and 30 others were injured in firing by security forces on February 15, after a mob barged into a government complex housing the DC and SP offices in Churachandpur, torched vehicles and ransacked property, hours after the suspension of a head constable.
