Government college teachers in Manipur under the banner of Federation of Govt College Teacher Association or FEGOCTA staged a sit-in-protest at NG College Lamphel in Imphal West on Thursday demanding issue of order for implementation of the 7th University Grants Commission (UGC) and Regulations 2018.

The protesting teachers have also sought immediate intervention from Chief Minister N Biren Singh after the state government failed to issue orders which had earlier received the state cabinet’s nod for implementation.

According to FEGOCTA general secretary Dr N Somorendro Singh, the association had submitted an ultimatum letter to chief minister N Biren Singh on January 11 requesting him to issue orders for implementation of the 7th UGC and Regulations 2018 based on the state cabinet’s approval on 6 August 2020.

The teachers’ association stated that the implementation of the national policy of 7th UGC pay and Regulations 2018 was approved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi three years ago, however, it is yet to be implemented in the state.

Expressing his disappointment, Dr Somorendro Singh said that despite the repeated requests and even after 154 days of the cabinet approval, the concerned authorities have failed to act.

It may be mentioned that there are around 2,000 teachers from 35 recognised government colleges in the state.
