Manipur Governor Bhalla Meets Political Delegation Opposing Delimitation Amid Ethnic Tensions

First Published: 12th May, 2025 20:40 IST

Bhalla Meets Political Delegation: The parties argued that the delimitation should be based on an accurate and up-to-date census.

Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla today met with representatives from 15 political parties at Raj Bhavan in Imphal.

The delegation, led by former Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar, submitted a memorandum urging the Governor to halt the ongoing delimitation exercise in the state.

The parties argued that the delimitation should be based on an accurate and up-to-date census, rather than the outdated 2001 Census, which they claim contains serious discrepancies.

Joykumar pointed out unusually high population growth rates in certain hill districts, such as Senapati (82%) and Chandel (73%), compared to the valley districts’ average of 18%. He said these inconsistencies could lead to unfair redrawing of Assembly constituencies.

The leaders further expressed concerns that conducting delimitation in the wake of the ethnic violence that began in May 2023 could inflame tensions between hill and valley communities. They warned that using the flawed 2001 data might deepen existing divides and spark political unrest.

The delegation urged the Central government to delay the delimitation until after a proper national census, expected no earlier than 2026. Governor Bhalla assured them that their concerns would be communicated to the Centre.

The parties stressed that peace and unity must remain the priority during this sensitive period.
