Governor Bhalla’s visit is being seen as a crucial attempt to bridge divides and address the concerns of the Kuki-Zo community.
In a significant political move, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla visited the border town of Moreh to address escalating tensions in the region. His visit included a tour of the Integrated Check Post (ICP), where officials from the Land Port Authority briefed him on ongoing operations and infrastructure.
Governor Bhalla also met with representatives of Kuki civil society organisations (CSOs), including the Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal, Kuki Chiefs’ Association, Hill Tribal Council, Kuki Women Union & Human Rights, Kuki Students’ Organisation, and Moreh Youth Club. The delegation submitted a memorandum outlining four key demands critical to the safety and autonomy of the Kuki-Zo community:
- Union Territory for Kuki-Zo Tribes: Citing alleged persecution by the Meitei community, the CSOs demanded the creation of a Union Territory outside the Manipur Valley.
- Outlawing Radical Meitei Groups: The memorandum called for groups like Arambai Tenggol and Meitei Leepun to be designated as banned organisations, accusing them of inciting violence.
- Rejection of Resettlement Policy: Opposing the resettlement of Meiteis in hill areas, the CSOs demanded protection for Kuki properties in Imphal and warned of retaliation if their concerns were ignored.
- Reinstatement of ADC Office: To address governance challenges, the reinstatement of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) office in Moreh was proposed.
The demands reflect deep-seated grievances and growing calls for political solutions to the ethnic conflict.
Governor Bhalla’s visit is being seen as a crucial attempt to bridge divides and address the concerns of the Kuki-Zo community. However, with both communities standing firm on opposing sides, the path to peace remains uncertain. Observers stress the need for decisive action from the central and state governments to prevent further destabilisation of the region.
