Manipur: Doctor’s strike to continue till written assurance on demands, says Gen Secy Dr Loli P Mao

Dr Mao asserted that the strike will go on unless they receive a written assurance from the Manipur government regarding fulfilment of their demands
Amid the indefinite shutdown announced by government doctors under the banner of AMHSDA that has hit medical services in many government-run hospitals of Manipur, state health minister Dr Sapam Ranjan has urged the All Manipur Health Services Doctors’ Association (AMHSDA) to call off its indefinite strike.
However, the AMHSDA said that it would not budge until it gets a written assurance from the Manipur government regarding fulfillment of their demands.
Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, the general secretary, AMHSDA, Dr Loli P Mao said that they cannot think of calling off the strike without a written assurance from the government.
Admitting that there has been a delay in taking a decision on the demands of the AMHSDA due to “some reasons,” Minister Ranjan said that a clear answer was given in the Assembly Session recently regarding the government’s commitment to fulfil their demands.
The Manipur health minister added that while the stir has affected OPD services, it has not yet affected emergency services in Government hospitals.
The demands of AMHSDA include time-bound promotion; extension of superannuation age of specialists and non-specialist doctors to 65 years; inclusion of NPA in the basic pay with effect from January 1 of 2016 as per the 7th Central Pay Commission; and amendment of the ‘outdated’ MHS Rules 1982.
In a release, AMHSDA general secretary Dr. Lolee P Mao informed that the association had initially presented eight charter demands, which were later reduced to four at the request of the government.
However, despite repeated appeals and commitments made in the cabinet meetings, not a single demand has been granted to date.
Instead, the demands were haphazardly presented and misinterpreted during the recently concluded assembly session, thus misleading the public, the general secretary said.
