Ever since the killing of 14 innocent civilians in Nagaland’s Mon district, the renewed demand for removal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act has found support from various quarters from across the region. While Nagaland continues to be extremely vocal about AFSPA repeal, in neighbouring Manipur, the controversial act is turning into a major political issue ahead of the polls.
In fact, the Manipur Congress today trained guns on the N. Biren Singh-led government in the state, accusing it of maintaining double standards. In a media briefing in Imphal this afternoon, Manipur Congress working president K Meghachandra said that while on one hand, the Manipur government claims that the law and order scenario in the state has improved, it gives a go-ahead for extension of AFSPA on the other.
The Congress questioned that if the law and order situation has improved, why is Manipur witnessing pre-poll violence and why has the governor given ex-post facto approval to declare the entire State excluding the Imphal Municipal areas as “disturbed” with retrospective effect from December 1, 2021 for a period of one year.
Manipur Congress leader and MLA K Meghachandra also hit out at Chief minister N Biren Singh for blaming other political parties for the killing of BJP workers on Sunday night. Terming it unfortunate, Meghachandra said that the Chief Minister must make statements after ascertaining facts following due investigation.
