Manipur: Complete Ban on Plastic from April 15, Violators to be Fined Upto Rs 2000

In a significant step toward tackling environmental issues, the Manipur government has announced a complete ban on single use plastic products across the state, effective from April 15, 2025. To ensure public awareness and cooperation, a state-wide campaign will commence on April 7, 2025.

During a consultative meeting in Imphal today, Principal Secretary of Environment and Climate Change AK Sinha urged the public to support the initiative. He said that strict penalties would be imposed on violators, with fines ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 2,000, depending on the quantity of plastic involved and whether it is a repeat offense.

“The government will take all necessary steps to fully implement the Manipur Plastic Policy 2022. Everyone must be aware that single-use plastic is harmful to both health and the environment. Instead of using these hazardous products, we must switch to safer alternatives. The government has already initiated the ban on single-use plastic, and inspections will begin on April 15 to ensure strict enforcement,” AK Sinha stated.

The Environment and Climate Change Department will lead the campaign in collaboration with the Municipal Administration, Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD) and the Manipur Pollution Control Board. The drive will cover both urban and rural areas to educate citizens about the harmful effects of plastic pollution.

Authorities have called on businesses, local bodies, and citizens to cooperate in making Manipur a plastic-free state.
