Manipur communities, student orgs decide to support protests, movements for NRC in Manipur

The decisions were taken at a consultative meeting held in Imphal on Wednesday to create awareness about the demographic challenges faces by people of Manipur and the need for NRC

The consultative meeting held on Wednesday in Imphal to discuss implementation of NRC in Manipur has decided to form a joint committee and support movements and protests held by organisation demanding introduction of NRC in the state.
The meeting that was organised by 6 student organisations – All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA), Students’ Union of Kangleipak (SUK) and Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS) adopted 6 resolutions –
- Mount pressure on government to take steps necessary for NRC implementation in Manipur
- Extend support and endorse movements/ protests demanding NRC implementation in the state
- Make collective efforts to raise awareness and consciousness about the demographic challenges confronting Manipur
- To mount pressure on the government to make the population full fledged and functional at the earliest
- To further organise similar joint discourse/ discussion/ meetings
- To form a joint committee for demanding NRC implementation in Manipur
The meeting was attended by representatives and delegates of different communities and tribes of the state including the Meiteis, Metei Pangals, Kukis, Nagas, Nepalis and Telis.
“We decided to organise this consultative discussion to enhance the consciousness level of the people regarding the prevailing demographic challenges that we are facing in Manipur. We feel that it is high time and it is time to address the needs of NRC. Therefore, it is very much imperative to organise a common platform or forum of all the stakeholders and participating representatives of the ethnic groups, now that manipur has been comprising by ethnic groups,” Leishangthem Lamyanba, President of Democratic Student Alliance of Manipur said speaking to Northeast Live.
The meeting was held to find a common ground so that misunderstandings and misconceptions regarding NRC implementation in the state can be avoided.
The 6 student bodies had organised protests across the state and have even staged protests in New Delhi and submitted memorandum to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding implementation of NRC in the state.
