Manipur: CM praises Shirui villagers for banning hunting of animals and birds

In an effort to preserve biodiversity and protect wildlife, the residents of Shirui village in the Ukhrul district of Manipur have banned all hunting and killing of animals and birds within its jurisdiction for the next three years.
The ban came into effect in October this year and will remain in force until 2026.
On October 17, the headmen of Shirui Ato and Aze wrote to the Divisional Forest Officer of Ukhrul informing about their move and requested the Forest Department to provide them with a high-quality drone (small or medium-sized unmanned aerial vehicle) so they could carry out biodiversity conservation in a proper and efficient manner.
Notably, this is the first time in the state that someone/ people has taken such a step to preserve biodiversity and protect wildlife.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh today lauded the outstanding initiative taken by the people of Shirui Village and said that such actions set an example for the entire state and beyond.
“For the first time in Manipur, the people of Shirui village have decided to completely ban the hunting and killing of animals and birds within their jurisdiction. It is a remarkable step towards the conservation of biodiversity and the protection of our precious wildlife. I express my heartfelt appreciation for the outstanding initiative taken by the people of Shirui Village. Such actions set an example for the entire state of Manipur and beyond,” CM N Biren Singh wrote on X.
