Manipur CM N Biren Singh Refutes Concerns Raised by MCPCR Over Rising Suicides in Relief Camps

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has dismissed concerns raised by the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) over rising incidents of suicides in relief camps and attributed the recent suicide by a 20-year-old at the Mekola Relief Centre in Imphal West to family issues.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an event today, CM Singh said, “Based on the information available to me, the incident (suicide at the relief camp) seems unrelated to the conditions in the camp. It was not because of the living conditions in the relief camp. It was because of some internal family issues. We have registered an FIR, and an investigation is underway.”
The MCPCR, led by Md. Habibur Rahman and Chabungbam Anita, visited the Mekola Relief Centre at Mekola Higher Secondary School after the incident to assess the living conditions.
The team raised concerns about the prolonged stay of camp residents, with some enduring over 19 months of displacement. They highlighted issues such as depression, insecurity, and a sense of hopelessness stemming from the monotony of daily life in the camps.
The 20-year-old who died by suicide was a native of Singhat in Churachandpur district. She had been married for just four months to Sukham James. The couple, along with two family members, had been staying at the relief camp. She was found hanging near her bed around 4:15 pm on January 7, her husband was away at work.
Police have registered a case with the Nambol police station, and her body has been sent to the JNIMS morgue for post-mortem.
While the chief minister has assured a thorough investigation, the MCPCR’s observations have spotlighted the mental health challenges faced by residents in relief camps. This incident has reignited the debate on the need for improved living conditions and mental health support for displaced communities in Manipur.
