Manipur CM N. Biren Singh Leads Destruction of Drugs Worth Over Rs 399 Crore

This marks the sixth drug destruction initiative since the BJP-led government assumed power in 2017 and launched its "War on Drugs" campaign.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, accompanied by his cabinet colleagues and senior police officials, disposed of over 314 kilograms of seized drugs worth more than Rs. 399 crore. The destruction took place at the Shija Common Bio-Medical Waste Treatment Facility in Lamdeng, Imphal West, on Saturday.
The seized narcotics included 9.844 kilograms of heroin powder, 244.409 kilograms of brown sugar, 26.239 kilograms of WY tablets, 661 grams of SP capsules, 493 grams of N-10 tablets, 505 grams of pseudoephedrine, and 32.280 kilograms of cannabis (ganja).
This marks the sixth drug destruction initiative since the BJP-led government assumed power in 2017 and launched its “War on Drugs” campaign.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Biren Singh highlighted that the campaign, initiated in late 2017, was aimed at protecting the youth from the menace of drugs. He revealed that the government initially faced significant resistance, criticism, and threats targeting police personnel involved in the crackdown.
“The government is destroying poppy plantations wherever they are found. We are working tirelessly to defeat and dismantle those involved in drug trafficking. Authorities are maintaining strict vigilance on highways, border areas, and within the city to curb these activities,” CM Biren stated.
The Chief Minister appealed to all investigating authorities to handle drug-related cases with sincerity and avoid compromising on their duties.
Despite the challenges posed by drug mafias, particularly those cultivating poppy in hill areas such as Saikul in Kangpokpi, IT Road, and Litan in Ukhrul district, CM Biren reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating these plantations and combating drug-related activities.
He also expressed gratitude to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Assam Rifles, the Army, the Forest Department, and the police for their cooperation in this mission. The Chief Minister urged the public to support the state government’s drive against drugs and contribute to a drug-free Manipur.
Highlighting the success of the “War on Drugs” campaign, Biren Singh noted that the number of drug addicts in the state had significantly decreased to fewer than 200 individuals. This reduction, he said, underscores the positive impact of the government’s persistent efforts.
