The meeting would review the law and order situation after the discovery of the six bodies of three women and three children.

Amid escalating violence in Manipur, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has called for an emergency meeting with Ministers and MLAs today at 6 PM in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Imphal.

The meeting would review the law and order situation after the discovery of the six bodies of three women and three children who were abducted from Jiribam on November 11.

The letter to all the Ministers and National Democratic Alliance (BJP and its allies) MLAs stated, “Chief Minister has desired to chair a meeting to review the developing law and order situation in the State, along with Ministers and MLAs of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Monday, November 18, at 6 PM. Ministers and MLAs of the NDA are accordingly requested to attend the same.”

A separate notice addressed from CM’s office to Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (CoCOMI) has urged the body “to refrain from taking up any violent form of agitation at this critical juncture and to jointly deliberate.”

Meanwhile, the Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP), a long-time ally of the BJP-led Manipur government, has withdrawn its support yesterday. The decision comes in response to the worsening unrest in the state. In a letter to BJP National President J P Nadda talking about the withdrawal of support, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed “deep concern” over the situation, and said, “We strongly feel that the Manipur State Government under the leadership of Shri Biren Singh has completely failed to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy. Keeping the current situation in mind, the National People’s Party has decided to withdraw its support to the Biren Singh-led Government in Manipur, with immediate effect.”

The unrest has led to indefinite curfews in seven districts Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Churachandpur, and Kangpokpi. Internet services have been suspended across these areas to prevent the spread of misinformation and to control the situation.

Angry mobs attacked and vandalized the residences of several MLAs, including that of Chief Minister N. Biren’s son-in-law and Sagolband MLA RK Imo. Among other targeted were Dr. Sapam Ranjan, Health and Public Relations Minister and Konthoujam MLA, Thongam Biswajit, Power Minister and Thongju MLA, K Govindas, PWD Minister and Bishnupur MLA, Nishikant Sapam, Keishamthong MLA, Thangjam Arun Kumar, Wangkhei MLA, Sapam Kunjakeswar, Patsoi MLA, Khwairakpam Raghumani, Uripok MLA, Soraisham Kebi Devi, Naoriya Pakhanglakpa MLA, Khumukcham Joykisan, Thangmeiband MLA, Kongkham Robindro, Mayang Imphal MLA. Their homes were ransacked, and properties set ablaze by irate mobs. Flag marches by the Army and security forces is being conducted in Imphal city since yesterday evening to restore a semblance of order.
