Manipur: 41 Arrested, Including Juvenile, for Arson and Vandalism at Residences of Elected Members

Police arrested three more individuals on Saturday for their alleged involvement in the vandalism and arson targeting the residences of MLAs.
Manipur Police arrested three more individuals on Saturday for their alleged involvement in the vandalism and arson targeting the residences of elected representatives in Imphal on November 16, according to an official release.
This brings the total number of arrests in connection with the incidents to 41, the release stated.
On November 22, police arrested Mayanglambam Harison Singh (28), Wahengbam Samson Singh (32), and Yengkhom Chandrashekhar Singh (57) in Kakching. On November 23, three more individuals Mutum Rojen alias Mangi Singh (28), Laishram Bijoy Meetei (21), and Jameson Thokchom alias Dhojo (20) were apprehended in Imphal West, along with a juvenile.
The violence broke out on November 16 after the discovery of the bodies of civilians abducted by armed militants in Jiribam, including an infant and an elderly woman. The public outrage over these killings led to attacks on the homes and properties of several ministers and MLAs. In response, some ministers have fortified their residences with barbed wire and increased security measures.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh reiterated his government’s commitment to safeguarding the democratic right to peaceful protest while strongly condemning the acts of vandalism. “I have repeatedly denounced the violence and expressed support for those genuinely protesting the killings of innocent people. Peaceful and democratic agitation is a right, and we respect that,” he said. However, he criticized certain groups for resorting to violence under the guise of protests, referring to them as “gangs” and assuring the public that legal action was being taken against the perpetrators.
The Chief Minister described the destruction of public and private properties, looting, and arson as acts of mischief disguised as democracy. He urged all sides to exercise restraint. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies continue their investigation and are actively pursuing those responsible for the violent incidents.
