To address key concerns raised by the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) regarding the functioning of the Department of Sports, a high-level meeting was convened on Tuesday at the Civil Secretariat in Itanagar. The meeting was chaired by Arunachal Pradesh Minister for Law Kento Jini.
The AAPSU delegation, led by the Union’s Sports Secretary Zentle Mosu, presented several demands and issues requiring immediate attention. After detailed deliberations, several resolutions were adopted.
The key resolutions adopted during the meeting were:
1) 80% Direct Recruitment for District Sports Officers (DSOs). AAPSU had demanded that 80% of DSOs posts be filled through direct recruitment. While the existing Recruitment Rules do not allow this, the Minister assured the formation of an Expert Committee to examine the legal feasibility of the demand. The committee, chaired by Dr. Mari Angu, Joint Secretary, AR, includes officials from Sports, Finance, Law departments, and a representative from APPEA. The committee has been directed to submit its report within 20 days.
2) Recruitment of Coaches and Wardens. The Minister informed that five coach posts approved by the State Cabinet will be referred to APPSC/APSSB within one month, once clearance from the AR Department and Law & Finance vetting is completed. Additionally, the remaining 29 posts including hostel wardens will also be processed within a month following the formality codes.
3) Student Intake at Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy. The government has agreed to increase the annual student intake at the Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy, Miao, following the completion of infrastructure development within the next two years.
4) Issues at Miao Sports Academy. Concerns regarding irregular power supply and deteriorating facilities at the Miao Academy were acknowledged. The department assured timely intervention to resolve these issues.
5) Transparency in Fund Utilization. In a move towards greater transparency, the Director of Sports has been directed to submit a detailed report on the utilization of funds for the Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy to AAPSU within five days.
