Longbir Terang Makes History with First-Ever Karbi Sonnet Collection “Thurnon”

Longbir Terang has created history by becoming the first writer to publish a book of sonnets in the Karbi language. His new book, Thurnon, which means “Rise” was released on Saturday at Diphu, Karbi Anglong.
Famous linguistic expert Chikari Tisso and well-known writer and critic Khagen Engti attended the book launch. They praised Terang for taking a bold and creative step by bringing the sonnet form a classical style of poetry into Karbi literature for the first time.
Thurnon contains 100 original sonnets that explore important themes like Karbi identity, nationalism, love, life, and prayers. The poems use a rich and rhythmic style while keeping a strong and clear structure.
Longbir Terang, a poet, lyricist, translator, and editor from Diphu, is a respected name in Karbi literature. His well-known works include Sengve Alunjir Vol. 1 (2019), Ne Artho Nangrot ra Nevi Asat Langtha te (2022), and Nangne Ale Ave Akithi Ke (2023). He has also written critical essays in Karbi Ahirjir Aklong Alam Kangsirdam Vol. 1 (2019).
Apart from writing, Terang has worked hard to preserve and promote Karbi culture. He co-translated Karon Hansepi’s Ne Pen Ne Harchi into English as Me and My Shadow (2018) and co-edited Sengve Arlo Aharchi Archim Vol. I & II and Songs of the Karbi Hills. He also helped document Kacharhe Alun (Karbi funeral songs) with support from the Firebird Foundation.
He is currently part of a project translating the poems of Kazi Nazrul Islam into multiple languages. As a lyricist, Terang has written more than 80 Karbi songs, showing his deep love for his community and its culture.
