Lok Sabha Polls-Meghalaya: We will win both Shillong and Tura seats, affirms CM Conrad Sangma

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Conrad Sangma said every election is tough and that he does not take any opponent lightly.

Who will win the battle for the Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats?

While the Congress will be looking to retain its Shillong bastion, the NPP will too look for the same as far as the Tura seat is concerned. But this time it might not be a smooth sail for the Congress in Shillong, as the NPP is contesting the parliamentary elections for the first time in the seat.

In the Tura seat too, incumbent MP and NPP candidate Agatha Sangma is also likely face a keen contest from TMC candidate Zenith Sangma, brother of former Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma and Saleng A Sangma of the Congress, and sitting MLA from Gambegre.

However, at this juncture Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP chief Conrad Sangma is quite confident that it will be his party, who will have the last laugh in both the parliamentary seats.

But, Conrad Sangma is taking the elections and every opponent seriously and considers that any election is always tough.

In an exclusive interview with Northeast Live, Conrad Sangma said, “No elections can be taken easy, no election can be taken lightly. As a candidate, as a party, it is our duty to take every single candidate contesting against us seriously and leave no stone unturned during our campaign trail, to ensure that we garner maximum support for our candidates. So I don’t take anybody lightly. All elections are tough, we are working very hard, but as I said we are getting very good response from the people in the grassroot level. So I am very confident that inspite of the challenges and the difficulties and the strong opposition candidates that are there, we will come out victorious. Absolutely we are very confident that we will win both the seats, Shillong and Tura both.”

Asked about how was the mood of the people since he has travelled across the length and breadth of Meghalaya for campaigning, Conrad Sangma said, “Mood is very positive. I have been through many elections in my political journey and I have seen this election, especially the MP election and specifically in Khasi and Jaintia Hills, for the first time NPP is contesting there. There is a very strong sense of determination among the people, specially our leaders our candidates, they are working very very hard to win the elections. I have myself campaigned there very aggressively and even the same energy we are seeing in the Garo Hills, because while I campaign here, Agatha is campaigning somewhere else, whereas our leaders Thomas A Sangma, Marcuise N Marak are campaigning in other areas, so it is a very positive environment and again I am very sure that the NPP will come out victorious and NDA candidates will win both the seats in Meghalaya.”

Besides, the Meghalaya Chief Minister also finds the 2024 Lok Sabha elections quite different from the previous elections.

Asked as to why, Conrad Sangma in his response said, “It is quite different in fact because may be for the first time though we have always been NDA partners, we have seen that there is a very strong understanding among the NDA partners which is a really wonderful thing, and we have seen whether it is in Nagaland, in Manipur, Arunachal and of course in Meghalaya and even also in Tripura. We have seen that there is a good coordination between the NDA, a sense of teamwork and support is there, of course challenges will always be there and we have to work hard. I always maintain that every election is a tough election, but we are seeing a very positive response from the people and I am sure that in the Lok Sabha elections this time, especially in the Northeast, we will see a very positive response from the people for all the NDA candidates. So I hope and wish them all the very best and I hope that they will come up with maximum numbers.”
