The group, which included men, women, and children, was immediately stopped by the residents.

Tension gripped the Jalalpur area near the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Katigorah, Cachar district, Assam on Tuesday night after locals intercepted and detained around 30 Bangladeshi nationals traveling in five auto-rickshaws.

The incident occurred around 9 PM when residents noticed suspicious movement of several people in autos. When locals asked them to identify themselves, the individuals reportedly failed to produce valid documents, raising suspicion.

The group, which included men, women, and children, was immediately stopped by the residents. Locals then informed the police, who arrived at the scene and took all 30 individuals into custody.

Police have started an investigation and are interrogating the detainees to trace the network of agents involved in the attempted border crossing.

The incident comes amid the Ministry of Home Affairs’ recent directive to all states and union territories to verify and identify illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar within 30 days.

Sources said that most of the detainees had illegally entered India long ago and had been working as laborers in different states. On Tuesday night, they were allegedly trying to return to Bangladesh via the Jalalpur border with the help of agents.
